All About Driverless Taxis on Dubai Roads in 2023

Dubai is all set to become the first city-state in the world to have driverless taxis on its roads. This has been made possible by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which has already started testing these taxis.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that by 2023, driverless taxis will be available on Dubai roads.

Autonomous vehicles for hatching and incubation

The RTA recently launched a new initiative called “autonomous vehicles for hatching and incubation”, which aims to help entrepreneurs and companies develop their ideas from concept to reality. The project will also provide funding for research institutions and support business models in the field of smart mobility, including autonomous vehicles.

All About Driverless Taxis on Dubai Roads in 2023

The RTA announced its plans to introduce self-driving taxis in Dubai in March 2020. It is collaborating with global technology companies such as Toyota, Daimler AG, Nokia Bell Labs and Intel Corporation to develop the technology behind these taxis.

The RTA has already started testing out these vehicles at their testing grounds in Al Aweer and Al Jafiliya. They are also working on an integrated system that will allow passengers to book these taxis using an app or via Smart City cards.

While driverless cars are already on our roads in some places around the world – including London – many people are still wary about travelling in these autonomous vehicles. However, with Uber’s fleet of driverless taxis, there will be no need to worry about safety or competence when booking a ride home from the airport or festival venue at night.

Nissan Role

Nissan is also working on developing its own driverless car platform for commercial use. The Japanese carmaker first showcased its autonomous taxi prototype in 2018.

How Does It Work?

The taxi service will be provided by a fleet of 6,000 vehicles - all-electric and fully automated - that will operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

A passenger will be able to hail a driverless car through an app on their smartphone or through an RTA kiosk at any Dubai Metro station or bus stop. The service will only accept payment via credit card or debit card.

World's leading smart cities

The move comes as part of a wider strategy to make Dubai one of the world's leading smart cities and position it as a leader in innovation and technology adoption. "We are excited about this opportunity," said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. "We are keen on improving our services through technology."

Dubai is already home to several autonomous vehicle projects such as Careem's self-driving fleet, which operates within certain areas of the city, while Ford also launched its own trial with no human drivers behind the wheel back in 2016. The company recently unveiled its plans. Until then, you can rent and enjoy gasoline cars from rentalcarsuae.com.

Mattar Al Tayer said that the RTA has already started working on this project and it is expected to be launched by 2020. He also added that these taxis will be connected with each other through a network which will help them in sharing information about traffic conditions, accidents and other obstacles on roads.
